Living City

Every city has a beginning. Yours starts in Rome.

Living City is a new city-building simulation, currently a small playable Roman-era prototype. The ambition is to grow the same city across 2,000 years, preserving its history along the way. Living City is a working title.

Try Living City on Windows or Android

Roman prototype v0.1.3: unfinished and experimental. The Android interface is best suited to larger screens in landscape. Saves may change during development.

  • Windows

    Windows 10/11 · 64-bit

Extract the ZIP, then open Living City.exe. No separate Godot installation is needed. Start with roads, farms, a market and a well; use Zone homes to drag or tap residential land beside roads.

  • Android

    Android 7+ · ARM · Landscape

Open the APK to install Living City Dev. Android may ask you to allow installs from your browser. Drag with Zone homes to designate an area, or use Inspect to drag-pan. Tap to build civic services and use camera buttons. Save manually before leaving.

What’s new in this build
  • Residential zoning is playable: drag an area or tap plots beside roads; residents build their own homes gradually.
  • Development needs road access, a well, market, sustainable food, grain reserves, jobs and housing demand. Select empty zoned land to see what is missing.
  • Removing a zone preserves existing homes and their history. Old Roman saves migrate with building identities intact.
  • New open-courtyard forum, striped market stalls with produce, and detailed wheat fields with boundary rails.
  • Softer river depth and ripples replace hard water bands; irregular banks blend towards the grass.
  • Shared baked model geometry reduces decorative scene nodes; checked in a 256-building test neighbourhood.
  • New scenery: mottled meadows, outer hills, a winding river, reeds and olive/cypress groves.
  • Roman houses gain three stable silhouettes, tiled roofs, doors, shutters and amphora details.
  • Paved roads join without crossing curbs; improved civic columns and gabled roofs. The planning grid appears only while building.
  • Plan residential neighbourhoods and manually place roads, farms, markets, wells, temples and a forum.
  • Connect buildings to the forum by road, provide food and water, and watch residents arrive.
  • Manage grain, taxes and maintenance, inspect district statistics, and adjust simulation speed.
  • Pan, rotate and zoom a low-poly 3D landscape. Touch supports zone painting, Inspect-mode drag-to-pan and camera buttons.
  • Save and reload your settlement, including persistent building identities, construction dates and heritage protection.

Windows is an unsigned development build; Android is development-signed. Automated simulation and rendered interaction checks run on Linux. Native Windows and physical Android device playtesting are pending. The concept artwork shows a visual ambition; the gameplay screenshot shows the actual prototype.

In the Roman prototype

  • Zone residential neighbourhoods; manually place roads, farms, markets, wells, temples and a forum
  • Provide roads, water, food and jobs; watch homes emerge gradually as demand grows
  • Manage a treasury, grain reserves, tax income and maintenance costs
  • Inspect district statistics and the history of individual buildings
  • Save your settlement, protect heritage and explore with a rotating 3D camera

Later eras, transport networks, detailed crime and unrest, and large-city simulation are future plans, not features of this build.
